In a initial day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” New York City, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious start to his term.

A Groundbreaking Figure

The new political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

The inauguration was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over political establishments.

A Sweeping Platform

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a agenda featuring:

• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these services may prove difficult to secure. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly cordial.

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in delivering essential functions: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and ensuring smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
