An Compassion of Strangers: The Way a Man I Had Just Met Assisted Me Secure the Job That Changed My Life

During the closing decade of the 80s, I set out on a backpacking trip to Europe with a travel partner. Since my travel mate was interested in starting a postgraduate program in New York, we had booked a fortnight visit there on the way to London.

We arrived at the postgrad residence, a sizeable 10-storey building on the Manhattan's Upper West Side named International House. Setting down our luggage, we made our way to the canteen, where we picked up meals, sat down, and began chatting with people eating there.

Sitting next to me was an gentleman from Iraq pursuing an engineering degree at a prestigious New York university. He wanted to know what I my profession was, and I explained that I had recently completed my studies with a scientific background and had been working on studies using an electron microscope.

He pointed out that there was an microscopy facility at the institution – close to the engineering department, which was how he knew about it. He recommended that I should apply for a job with them. I dismissed the idea, telling him that I was about to fly to Europe and, additionally, I lacked a US visa.

The next day I toured the city, returning to the canteen that night. The engineering student walked over to me and told me that he had organized a discussion for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Since he had gone to the trouble, I went to the meeting – but right away told my host that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

As is common in NYC – a city where anything feels possible – she said: “We'll handle it. What's your start date?” I missed my plane to London.

I was employed there for three years. One of the benefits was that I got complimentary education at Columbia, and I took advantage to earn a graduate degree in global studies.

I lost touch with him and I don’t even know his identity, but his selfless gesture transformed my future in multiple respects. I lacked the confidence or self-belief to approach someone at an prestigious college and ask for a job. Moreover, I had always wanted to pursue education overseas, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that tuition waiver.

Critically, that gig at Columbia led me to a job in Zurich where I met my handsome spouse from France, with whom I now have a family of four kids. It was a total sliding doors moment. That benevolent individual set me on a different course in life, and I’m always appreciative.
