"Any idea when you're interviewing the Haim sisters?" an inquiry arrives. "My request was to ask if I can be their fourth member."

There's just a single issue: I also wants to be the Haims' additional sibling. And we're in plentiful company. Multiple celebrated admirers have publicly begged for the honor.

It's clear a special quality is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their path playing gigs at local delicatessens with their parents. Presently, they stand as multi-time Grammy Award hopefuls.

In the tradition of the most iconic ensembles, they're a close gang. Their videos repeatedly depict them marching in harmony down the streets of Los Angeles. On stage, they play with such boundless joy you inevitably think, "I'd love to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a guitar'," says Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That is the greatest compliment. That is recognition in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire young girls to make music."

"And thus anyone gets an invitation to be the honorary member of Haim."

Grammy Milestone

The trio have called into a break, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently processing the news it's been shortlisted for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first all-woman band ever in consideration for the award.

"I watch the lists every year, so it kind of feels like The Truman Show when your name is announced," says Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I imagining things'?"

The importance of the honor is deeply felt by the trio.

"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge milestone," continues Alana. "However we're just grateful for the pioneers that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The record was born from a time of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that strange liminal space where you're glad to be free, but not entirely ready to start anew.

The lyrics follow breakups and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they aspire to be.

"I love summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to make an effort in ignoring the noise and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That developed resilience required a different sonic direction – more organic and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the percussion.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the perfect drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Laughter

The trio's candor inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their romantic horror stories.

Someone broke up with Este over a health concern. Alana shared a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Legacy

It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band. Today, Haim are more confident of their place in the music world.

They're major draws, with successful albums and an international fan base.

Yet Haim will forever be their top commitment.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was little," concludes Alana. "There is nothing else that we were meant to do. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still going strong."
