The White House disclosed the start of federal worker terminations on Friday, following through on prior threats in response to the continuing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third consecutive week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

Russell Vought wrote on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the government’s procedure for letting employees go.

While Vought provided no details on which departments were affected, a treasury spokesperson stated that layoff warnings had been issued within that agency. Furthermore, a DHS spokesperson indicated that staff reductions would also occur at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization representing federal workers confirmed that employees at the Department of Education would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Labor representatives warned that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on services used by millions of Americans and pledged to contest the actions in the legal system.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has exploited the government shutdown as an excuse to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who deliver essential functions to the public nationwide,” stated a national union president, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the news, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Congressional Democrats have refused to support a Republican-backed bill to reopen the government unless it includes provisions related to health policy. After repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, meaning the deadlock is not expected to be ended soon.

At a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, blasted opposition lawmakers for rejecting the Republican proposal, which was approved in the House on a largely partisan basis.
